For hundreds of years, the territory that is now Latvia was ruled by foreign powers—Germans, Swedes, and Russians. The upper classes spoke German; the administrative bureaucracy spoke Russian.

Latvian was widely regarded by the ruling elite as a “peasant dialect”, fit only for the fields and stables, lacking the sophistication for literature, science, or governance. It was an oral language, alive in the farmhouse but invisible in the library. Without a substantial written tradition to anchor it, the language faced a slow erosion.

Deconstructing the Daina: A Linguistic Atom

Barons did not set out to write a novel. He set out to collect dainas. A daina is a specific form of Latvian folk song that functions almost like a linguistic atom—compressed, durable, and structurally consistent.

From a linguistic perspective, dainas are fascinating because of their strict metrical constraints. They typically feature:
