While often remembered merely as the spoken language of antiquity—the tongue of Jesus and the administrative language of empires—Aramaic was equally a technological juggernaut. Its 22-letter alphabet didn’t just stay in the Fertile Crescent; it hitched a ride on the Silk Road, branching out to birth the writing systems for billions of people in modern Arabia and India. The Diplomat’s Tool: Imperial Aramaic

To understand how Aramaic traveled from the Mediterranean to the Ganges, we must look at the mechanics of empire. In the 6th century BCE, the Achaemenid Persian Empire rose to power, stretching from Turkey to the Indus River. The Persians made a pragmatic decision that changed linguistic history: rather than forcing their own complex cuneiform systems on conquered subjects, they adopted Aramaic as the official language of administration.

Aramaic utilized an abjad—a writing system where each symbol stands for a consonant, leaving the reader to supply the vowels based on context.
