Ask any child learning to count, and they’ll eventually stumble into one of English’s strangest quirks. Four becomes fourth. Six becomes sixth. Ten becomes tenth. The pattern seems obvious: add a “-th” and you’ve got yourself an ordinal number. But then the system collapses spectacularly at the very beginning. One doesn’t become “oneth.” Two doesn’t become “twoth.” Three doesn’t become “threeth.” Instead, we get first, second, and third—three words that seem to have wandered in from somewhere else entirely.
As it turns out, they did. And the story of where they came from reveals something profound about how human languages work, why the most common words are often the most irregular, and why this pattern repeats itself across languages spoken thousands of miles apart.
What Is Suppletion, Anyway?
Linguists have a name for this phenomenon: suppletion. Suppletion occurs when a word’s expected form is replaced by a completely unrelated word. It’s the same reason we say went instead of “goed”, better instead of “gooder”, and was instead of “be-ed.” The grammatical slot exists, but a different word entirely has been drafted to fill it.
Ordinal numbers—the words that indicate position in a sequence—are one of the most reliable places to find suppletion across the world’s languages. And curiously, the suppletion almost always clusters at the low end of the number line. Languages happily generate regular ordinals for seventeen, forty-two, and ninety-nine, but “first” and “second” frequently refuse to play by the rules.
The Secret History of ‘First’
Let’s start with first, because its origin is genuinely surprising: it isn’t derived from “one” at all. It never was.
English first comes from Old English fyrst, which is a superlative form related to the word fore—the same root you see in before, foremost, and forefront. In essence, first originally meant something like “foremost” or “the one furthest in front.” It’s a spatial word, not a numerical one. The -st ending is the same superlative suffix we see in best, most, and furthest.
This makes intuitive sense when you think about it. Before humans needed abstract ordinal counting, they needed to talk about who was at the front of the line, which warrior led the charge, which child was born earliest. The concept of “firstness” existed as a physical, spatial idea long before it was slotted into a counting system. When ordinals were needed, this ready-made word simply took the job.
‘Second’ Is a Latin Import
The story of second is different but equally revealing. Old English actually did have a native word for the second item in a sequence: ōther—yes, the ancestor of our modern word other. If you had two things in Old English, one was the first and one was “the other.”
The problem? Other was ambiguous. Did “the other day” mean the second day, or just some different day? To resolve this confusion, Middle English borrowed second from Old French, which took it from Latin secundus. And here’s the twist: secundus isn’t derived from the Latin word for two (duo) either. It comes from the verb sequi, meaning “to follow”—the same root that gives us sequence and sequel. The “second” thing is, etymologically, simply “the following one.”
So English’s first two ordinals mean, roughly, “the one in front” and “the one that follows.” Neither has anything to do with counting.
And What About ‘Third’?
Third is the closest to regular of the trio, but it’s still a rebel. It descends from Old English thridda—notice that the r and the vowel have swapped places over time, a process linguists call metathesis (the same process that turned Old English brid into modern bird). So while third is genuinely related to three, sound changes have disguised the connection and left it looking irregular. A truly regular form would have been “threeth.”
A Pattern That Spans the Globe
If this were just an English oddity, it would be a fun piece of trivia. But the same pattern shows up in language after language:
- Latin: The word for “one” is unus, but “first” is primus, from a root meaning “foremost” or “in front”—the source of English prime and primary. Similarly, secundus (“following”) stands in for a form based on duo.
- French: Un (one) but premier (first); deux (two) but the older ordinal second alongside the regular deuxième.
- German: Eins (one) but erste (first), which, like English first, is historically a superlative meaning “earliest” or “foremost.”
- Russian: Odin (one) but pervyj (first), from an entirely different root related to “before.”
- Hungarian: Egy (one) but első (first), built on el-, meaning “front” or “fore.”
- Arabic: Wāḥid (one) but awwal (first), an unrelated root.
Across these unrelated language families, “first” keeps being built from words meaning “front”, “before”, or “foremost”—never from the word for “one.” This is too consistent to be coincidence.
Why the Small Numbers Break the Rules
Linguists point to two intertwined explanations for this remarkable pattern.
1. Frequency protects irregularity
There’s a well-established principle in linguistics: the more frequently a word is used, the more likely it is to resist regularization. Rare words get smoothed out by analogy—speakers who don’t remember an irregular form simply apply the regular rule. But first and second are among the most common words in the language. Children hear them constantly and memorize them long before they internalize the “-th” rule. There’s never a moment of uncertainty where “oneth” could sneak in. (Though delightfully, children learning English sometimes do produce “oneth” and “twoth” before they’ve memorized the exceptions—evidence that the regular rule is alive in their minds.)
2. ‘First’ is conceptually special
The deeper reason is that being first isn’t really about counting at all. The first item in a sequence is defined by its position—at the front, before everything else—not by a numerical property. Human languages developed rich vocabulary for spatial and temporal priority (“front”, “before”, “leading”) long before abstract ordinal systems existed. When those systems emerged, the old spatial words were already entrenched in exactly the meanings needed. Higher ordinals like “seventeenth” had no such pre-existing competitors, so they were built regularly from cardinal numbers.
The Beautiful Logic of Irregularity
What looks like chaos—first, second, third versus the tidy fourth, fifth, sixth—is actually a fossil record. These irregular ordinals preserve an older layer of human thought, from a time when “firstness” meant standing at the front of the group and “secondness” meant following behind.
So the next time someone jokes about saying “oneth”, you can tell them the truth: we never lost the word “oneth”, because we never had it. We had something older and, in its way, more human—a word for the one out in front, leading the way.
